Friday, June 8th to Thursday, June 14th

A quick rundown of what’s going on in Cleveland this week. I should point out that in this case, a quick rundown can be translated as “There are plenty of solid shows going on this week, so find yourself a venue and some ice cold brews and enjoy the rock and roll.”

There’s plenty going on the west side on Friday night. Starting at Now That’s Class, Division of Planes, featured earlier this week on I Rock Cleveland, will be playing with The Vapids, Hollywood Blondes, and Chrome Kickers. The experimental, ambient noise sounds of Colorforms will be featured at Bela Dubby in Lakewood. Finally, at the Hi-Fi, the spy/fuzz/garage rock sounds of The Love Me Nots are the main attraction.

Meanwhile, cross town at The Beachland Tavern on Friday night, prepare yourself for an a/v explosion with Gang Gang Dance. Choose wisely.

On Saturday, power pop takes over the House of Blues when The Fountains of Wayne and The Broken West take the stage…It seems only fitting that while our beloved Cavaliers are about to tip-off their first appearance in the NBA Finals, the man behind our city’s long running theme song, “Cleveland Rocks,” and more importantly, the leader of the most influential band, Mott The Hoople, Ian Hunter plays The Beachland Ballroom.

Moving on to the work week. Monday night at The Ballroom, blog buzz sweethearts, Voxtrot lead a solid bill with Favourite Sons (a band who released one of my favorite debuts in 06), Au Revoir Simone, and Bears…Tuesday night, one of the most divisive bands of 07, The Horrors, bring their ghouly, garage punk to The Grog Shop…Also on Tuesday night, alt-country legend, Jay Farrar and his band Sun Volt play the Beachland Ballroom along with those purveyors of the dirty blues, The Black Diamond Heavies.

There are some difficult choices to make next Wednesday night. Parish Hall has a really solid bill with Julie Sokolow (Western Vinyl), Blake Miller (Exit Stencil), X-Bolex and The Unsparing Sea, The Goodnight Loving headline the Tavern with Vancouger, The Pages, and The Luxury Units, and perhaps best of all, The US Air Guitar Championships will have their Cleveland competition at the Cambridge room at The House of Blues. Tell me that this doesn’t look f’n awesome.

Lastly, I want to mention the scuzz rock fest happening at The Tower next Thursday night with Yukon, Archaeopteryx (remember my rule that prehistoric bands never suck), Double Dagger, Clan of The Cave Bear, and Self Destruct Button. Stay tuned, I’m going to have more on Double Dagger early next week.
