Columbus garage punks The New Bomb Turks, were one of the biggest bands from Ohio during the Nineties. They’re all a little older now, they all have “real” jobs, but for a few dates a year they get the band back together to teach the kids a thing or two about Rock ‘N’ Roll.

While the news about The Lime Spider closing shop in Akron is indeed sad, a Houseguest show is definitely something that can ease the pain a bit. More than any band from Akron area, Houseguest may have benefited the most from having a quality rock venue in town. This will most likely be their last appearance at the Lime Spider. Joining them will be Audio Eagle’s newest signing, Royal Bangs, and We Are They…Over at the Beachland Tavern on Friday night, are two local bands I’ve been meaning to check out, Artificial Sweeteners (featuring Dave Molnar formerly of The Dreadful Yawns, currently Expecting Rain and Hot Rails) and The Twilight.

Saturday night, the new label in town, Cellar Door Records is hosting a release party at The Beachland Ballroom. The $10 admission includes a cd sampler featuring the five bands playing that night: The Frozen Hellsicles, Keith Vance, This Is Exploding, (keepcalm) and Rachel Bruning…Meanwhile, next door at the Tavern, garage rockers Gore Gore Girls headline with Brimstone Howl and White Chapel Harlots.

Some words of advice if you’re going to The Tower City Ampitheater on Thursday to see Modest Mouse, Band of Horses and Love as Laughter — leave the cameras, video recorders, and camera phones at home. You don’t want to piss off that big beardo dude from Band of Horses. Besides, you may not believe me, but by taking your eyes away from that camera lens, you’ll actually see more of the show and you won’t need that youtube clip to jog your memory. You’ll have an honest to goodness memory. Enjoy the tunes.
