I don’t think I can call “The Greys” an anthem, an un-anthem, maybe. It has guitars that want to rush skyward to a soaring chorus, like an anthem, but as Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchinson recounts staying in, sleeping his worries away, and generally avoiding contact at all costs, it’s hard to get all excited and anthemic. If you’ve ever had the greys of days and days of depression, then you could understand the sentiment, “I woke up this afternoon thought maybe today the world might be a more colorful place,” only to find things still grey. What’s left to do, besides pulling the covers back over your eyes and hope the next hint of optimism won’t be a false start?
