The Supreme Being of King Khan and The Shrines is quite the bold album title, especially for a band on their first US release. As with all things Khan, there’s exaggeration, cheekiness, and a little bit of the truth in that title. Still, if your only exposure to King Khan is through his recorded material, you may doubt the genius of an Indian man channeling James Brown with his big, funky band. It certainly didn’t click initially with me. Then, it happened. I saw the live spectacle with singing and dancing, people gettin’ on up, then gettin’ on down, all led by the charismatic lead singer with a cape, crown, and short, short shorts. Genius, indeed.
