As the primary songwriter for the Portland, Oregon instrumental rock band Grails, Emil Amos plays a major role in shaping that band’s metaphysical narratives, steeped heavily in Eastern philosophy. Amos’ other band, Om (with whom he’s just recently been drumming), has a similar affinity for Eastern thought, with many of their songs playing out as extended meditations projected through drums and bass. Although his solo project, Holy Sons, shares similarities with both of those bands, it has neither the comlexity and grandeur of the former, nor the volume and repetitive nature of the latter. Quiet and contemplative, songs like “Things You Do Waiting for the Apocolypse,” manage to carry a sense of ease, even when dealing with such weighty subjects as the end of mankind.
