A lot has already been said about the new supergroup, Tinted Windows. Most of it hasn’t been too kind. Why? Well, I’m sure most of it has to do with lead vocalist, Taylor Hanson, of the Nineties pop band, Hanson, and his seemingly mismatched bandmates: Guitarist James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins, bassist Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, and drummer Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick.
Really, is this that odd of a combination that people are writing them off before their first show? Cheap Trick rules. James Iha rules. Fountains of Wayne have a couple really solid releases in their discog (especially their s/t release), and when I’m drunk and in a karaoke bar, I can’t resist Hanson’s “Mmm Bop.” Plus, it reminds me of another “out there” project Schlesinger took on in 2001, that of the Josie and the Pussy Cats soundtrack, a release which is way better than it has any right being.
Basically, what I’m saying here is that I heard their first single, “Kind of a Girl,” and I’m not ashamed to say I like it.
“Kind of a Girl” can be streamed at the Tinted Windows website. They’ll be playing this year’s SXSW and their full length debut will be out April 21st.
