Like a hairier, manlier, Norwegian version of the world’s cutest shredder, Marnie Stern, Norway’s Ungdomskulen specialize in the type dexterous guitar work which would seem to mandate either a second shredder, or at the very least, a couple extra digits on each guitar playing hand. Unlike Stern, whose music is first and foremost about shredding, Ungdomskulen augment their proggy guitar acrobatics on “Idunno” with a rhythm and a kick which is almost funk like in nature, and a vocal delivery which is disinterested, in that sweet slacker kind of way. Really, unless you don’t like guitar noodling, or are frightened by the mere mention of the word prog in front of your rock, what’s there not to like? Well, for you, there is the video edit, which slices out the instrumental interlude, paring “Idunno,” down in length to a prog pop song. Now, you can enjoy three minutes of skilled musicianship and you don’t have to worry about falling in with the Rush-listening, D&D crowd. Everyone’s a winner.
