Ideally, “The Slumbering Ones,” by the San Francisco psych-rock outfit, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, would find its way into a modern crime drama set in the Western desert, like No Country for Old Men. There’s a sense of finality, as once the sun sets and the guitars are cued, there’s no turning back. Heavy regrets can be shuttered, and deadly sins can be forgiven with achingly beautiful harmonies and a softly, lifting flute melody. Meanwhile, the guitars are played with the uneasiness of a wandering spirit, one which is uncertain of what to make of this barren, bleak, yet, strangely comfortable landscape. At nearly five minutes, “The Slumbering Ones,” could easily stretch for five more, lending the needed time to find the ever elusive peace of mind.
