The buzz building around recent DFA signees, Free Energy is a bit perplexing. Their lead single, “Free Energy,” is a bundle of everything you loved ’70s power pop — Cheap Trick, The Raspberries, a radio ready chorus, and an air guitar ready lead riff. And, it’s exactly the type of fun-loving guitar rock which consistently gets criticized for being redundant and unnecessary by the indie press. Not that I’m complaining. I’d crank this one on the stereo regardless of the fact Free Energy are on DFA Records (Instant cred) and have LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy credited in the liner notes as producer (Super cred).
