If there are Latin American themes running through Holy Fuck’s “Latin America,” they sure aren’t easily identifiable. It’s a techy, glitchy, bass-heavy piece of music with only the occasional clean sounding key. In other words, it’s not the type of song which would bring to mind the warmer climates south of Mexico. Of course, it is entirely possible that the Canadian electronic-noise-rock band have a vastly different sense of geography than we do, here in the States, and their version of Latin America includes not only countries routinely grouped as being in Latin America, like Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize, but also Detroit. How else would one be able to explain a song mixing instrumental rock with early Motor City techno being titled “Latin America?” Do Holy Fuck have a North American map with Canada etched in exquisite detail and the rest of the continent pictured as one big, blue shapeless blob? Stranger things have happened north of the border.
