“Tighten Up,” the first single from the Black Key’s forthcoming, sixth album, Brothers, is a bit of a throwback, but not in the way you would think for the Akron, blues rock duo. On an album where the bulk of the tracks were either self-produced by band members Pat Carney and Dan Auerbach, or co-produced with Mark Neill, “Tighten Up,” features production work by Danger Mouse, the man who steered the band toward a more modern sound on their previous effort, Attack and Release. This, of course, begs the question, just how representative of the album as a whole is this number? Is the whistling intro and full band sound featured here a break from the stripped down, murkier sounds laid down in Muscle Shoals Studios? Or, did the Keys travel down to Alabama, only to find their happy, fun, funkasouras? We have until May 18th to ponder that question. In the meantime, enjoy the funkasouras.
