Without taking too much crunch out of the mix, “You Make the Sun Fry,” finds San Francisco garage-rocker Ty Segall going mellow on us. Hooks were always rampant in his music, even as some in the biz (Myself included) were brandishing him as the next Jay Reatard, but now, with a mid-tempo groove backing him up, the hooks are indelible. In fact, to say this one’s Beatles-esque wouldn’t be much of a stretch. It’s got that classic quality to it and the harmonies to match. A better, comparison however, may be that of a John Lennon, rock ‘n’ roll demo for it’s got attitude and cool McCartney never could muster during his solo years.
