When Moon Duo introduce “Sleepwalkers” from their forthcoming album on Sacred Bones Records (out 10/2) with a little help from chief yogi, King Khan (of King Khan and the Shrines), and a small school of aerobics dancers (or, are they American Apparel models, it’s so hard to tell sometimes), one word comes to mind — mesmerized. And that’s before we even begin to talk about the music.
Like Ripley Johnson’s other band, Wooden Shjips, his project here with Sanae Yamada, delves deep into San Francisco’s psychedelic rock tradition with loopy, repetitive melodies. The second time around however, remember Moon Duo released one previous album in 2011, the pair sound stronger, even more sure of themselves, and more like a full time band rather than something to pass the time. Or, it could be King Khan and the American Apparel aerobics team. It’s so hard to tell.
