Akron-bred, blues rock duo, The Black Keys have settled their lawsuits against Pizza Hut and Home Depot over illegal use of their songs “Gold in the Ceiling” and “Lonely Boy” in commercials. Terms were not disclosed…Did you ever wonder how so many similar sounding songs end up in commercials in the first place? Are corporations really that evil that they won’t pay to legally use a song? Yes and no. This past summer, On the Media rebroadcast their story on how and why these soundalike songs come to be. It’s worth a listen or a read.

The winter 2013 release schedule is beginning to take shape and one of the new records that immediately caught my attention is Push the Sky Away, the 15th album by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, due out February 18th on Anti- Records. That’s the album’s trailer embedded below.

Also slated for winter and early spring 2013, are new albums by Low (produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy on 3/18), Pissed Jeans (2/12), Ensemble Pearl (With members of Sunn 0))), Boris, Ghost, Jess Sykes and the Sweethereafter and White Heaven) (March), Parts and Labors’ Dan Friel (2/22), Queens of the Stone Age (tbd) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (tbd). Still no news on that My Bloody Valentine album which was supposed to see the light of day by the end of 2012…In single news, Matador Records’ Singles Going Home Alone 7″ subscription series will return in 2013. This time around, membership will bring you 13 singles (1 per month and 1 bonus). The initial release schedule includes offerings by Jeffrey Novak (of Cheap Time), Superchunk, and Royal Headache. The 2013 schedule, as it stands to date, and details on how to join Singles Going Home Alone, can be found at the Matador Records website.

The Ohio City Masonic Temple will be hosting a New Year’s Eve benefit bash for the Cleveland breast cancer charity, Woo Who Foundation, with local scene kings, the Cloud Nothings, joined by Filmstrip, Village Bicycle, Glass Cities, Dead Sweaters, and the Secret Soul Club. Doors open at six and tickets are only $12 in advance or $15 on the day of the show. More information can be found here.

Ed. Totally forgot to add that part about the Matador Singles Series during the new release roundup. It’s there now.
