The Mass band, Krill, have a lot going for them. They have a steadily increasing profile on the up-and-coming rock label, Exploding in Sound records. They have a name and sound that reflects the best of ’90s guitar rock. And yet, in true ’90s, throwback fashion, they can’t find satisfaction in any of it. “Torturer,” taken from their upcoming album, A Distant Fist Unclenching (2.17 on Exploding In Sound / Double Double Whammy) examines the pain of modern romance through intelligent (i.e., dudes can play their instruments) and still accessible bombast. You’ve got your twists and turns of math rock and your tension and release of grunge. Unless the media has been telling you your whole life that the couch is as good as it gets, slacker, this one is guaranteed to get those old shit-kickers kickin’.
