The Rockometer: Glass Boys by Fucked Up

Fucked Up Glass Boys Matador Records Every generation needs a Fucked Up, a band who of punks who flout convention and twist expectations until the word punk, itself, becomes even more devoid of meaning. From album-side long singles inspired by the Chinese Zodiac to a rock opera, a fucking 21st Century rock opera, the band are reliably restless. Their sense of daring is not only apparent in th...READ MORE
Southern Comfort

A Jam Packed Wednesday with Southern Comfort, Fucked Up, Godflesh, White Lung, and Parquet Courts

As one half of Ruined Fortune, Angie Garrick has already released one of the year's best punky, sludgy noise rock albums. Here, with Southern Comfort, things are significantly sunnier, albeit in a fuzzed-out, blown-out speaker kind of way. The "Suzanne" 7" is out now on Hozac Records. Time will tell if Fucked Up's Glass Boys, the hardcore Toronto destroyers' third release for Matador (on 6.3), will also be their best. What...READ MORE

Play Me: “Led By Hand” by Fucked Up

"Led By Hand" is exactly the type of track that first attracted me to the wildly inventive Toronto hardcore group, Fucked Up. In fact, when one listens to "Led By Hand," it's almost unfair to label them at all. The fluid guitar tracks, and there are a whole hella lot of 'em, simultaneously saunter and scream. The individual pieces don't operate with urgency, but as whole they align for maximum output. The vocals operate in a simi...READ MORE

Jam Packed Wednesday with Fucked Up, The Horrors, The Black Angels, and Archie Bronson Outfit

Fucked Up's "Paper the House" is not your uncle's pop-punk anthem. For one thing, Fucked Up have always had better things to do than watch tv and rub one off, you know, like writing exceedingly long songs about the sex trade. And while, lead howler, Damian Abraham may question his life in a rock band through the lyrics, and rue the fact that it's driving him insane,  his yelp is as harsh as ever. Then, there's the matt...READ MORE

The Rockometer: David Comes to Life by Fucked UP

Fucked Up David Comes to Life Matador Is the rock opera, David Comes to Life, by the everything-and-a-hardcore band, Fucked Up, too ambitious of a project, or is it not ambitious enough?  With its story of young love gone horribly wrong in '8os England, and its arc, that of a Greek Tragedy (complete with a mingling narrator, I should add), and its back story, and companion compilation (David's Town), and, not to mention 16 trac...READ MORE

“Ship of Fools” and “Queen of Hearts” and by Fucked Up

With the release of the third and fourth preview singles ("Ship of Fools" and "Queen of Hearts," respectively) from their forthcoming rock opera, David Comes To Life, the question no longer seems to be if the Canadian hardcore band, Fucked Up, can pull it off, but, rather, how well. The big-time, glam guitars on "Ship of Fools" and the ecstatic, Clash-inspired lead riff of "Queen of Hearts," would stand out on their own without ...READ MORE

From the Rocker’s Notebook: Record Store Day in Cleveland 2011

* Talk to people at the record stores on Record Store Day and you quickly find out no one likes the exclusivity of the event.  The record buyers don't like having to get to the record store early only to get shut out of limited edition releases.  The sellers don't like the unpredictability of the releases.  Some times they get their full order.  Some times they get shorted, and when they do get shorted the you get even more bumme...READ MORE

“A Little Death” by Fucked Up

With the second single from the forthcoming David Comes to Life, it's starting to become apparent that Fucked Up weren't joking about this being their rock opera.  No, lead singer Damian Abraham hasn't switched out his howl for a more elegant delivery.  Rather, the grandness of "A Little Death" comes from its structure and instrumentation.  The intro features throbbing bass and tom and guitars stretching for the rafters.  The...READ MORE

“The Other Shoe” by Fucked Up

If there's one thing Fucked Up love, besides hardcore and prog, and psyhedelic rock and punk, and British pop and, well, pretty much all things rock, that is fucking with our expectations.  David Comes to Life, their upcoming record, is being billed as a rock opera and a concept album.  About what?  The poster above may or may not help.  "The Other Shoe," featured below, is being billed as the first single, and the first voice yo...READ MORE

The Rockometer: Year of the Ox by Fucked Up

Fucked Up Year of the Ox Merge Records Much like the Clash some 30 years before them,  punk rock is just a starting point used to explore other forms of popular music for the post-hardcore band, Fucked Up.  Tune into one of the Chinese Zodiac singles (Year of the Dog, Year of the Pig, and Year of the Rat, being the first three), or The Chemistry of Common Life, the most recent full-length by these Toronto rockers, and you'll g...READ MORE
